(Vocus/PRWEB ) February 19, 2010 — An 11-week-old rescued sea otter pup is the youngest ever to join the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s sea otter exhibit. The young female, Kit, joins 9-year-old resident Mae, acting as companion to the young pup.

11-week old sea otter pup Kit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium

Kit came to the Aquarium as a 5-week-old stranded animal, after she was rescued in Morro Bay by a sea otter biologist with the California Department of Fish and Game, following unsuccessful attempts to reunite her with her mother.

“We’re thrilled that our visitors will have this rare opportunity to see a sea otter pup up-close,” said Chris DeAngelo, the Aquarium’s associate curator of mammals. “We hope people will be inspired to protect these icons of the Central Coast.”

Kit will remain on exhibit as long as DeAngelo and her staff continue to see positive interactions between Kit and Mae, and if Kit eats well and adapts to her new home. When the time is right, Kit and Mae will be joined by the other exhibit sea otters – Maggie, Toola, Rosa and Joy (all adult females) – who are busy behind the scenes serving as surrogate mothers and companions to other stranded animals.

According to Andrew Johnson, Manager of the Aquarium’s Sea Otter Research and Conservation (SORAC) program, Kit is not a candidate for return to the wild. Other rescued pups are occupying behind-the-scenes areas needed by animals being raised for release, so the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has authorized the Aquarium to manage Kit in its sea otter exhibit.

SORAC cares for stranded sea otter pups and injured adults in off-exhibit holding pools to keep them wild for future release. More information about this groundbreaking program can be found on the Aquarium’s new Sea Otter Research and Conservation web pages.

In addition to seeing Kit in person, you can watch her on the Aquarium’s Otter Cam. Updates on the pup’s progress will be posted on the Aquarium’s blog, website and Facebook page.

The mission of the nonprofit Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the oceans.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) May 21, 2008 — Tenecor Aquarium’s design team today announced that they will be debuting a new series of tank and cabinetry designs at the biennial International InterZoo show in Nuremberg, Germany. New open top or “Euro-Braced” style aquariums with extra thick and impressive side walls will be displayed in styles ranging from Cylinders to Bull Noses, or “Bullet”, style tanks. Tenecor has also created a line of Milan designed cabinetry in collaboration with Limulus Italy, the renowned lighting manufacturer and Tenecor distributer, to appeal to the European and high-end US markets.

These recently unveiled designs have spurred installations and mass purchases of aquariums at companies such as Aquatic Adventure, Petland, RaSushi Resturants, TutorTime, Alaska Wildlife Refuge, Petline-Greece, and the Steinhart Aquarium, as well as several large corporations and government agencies. Tenecor believes that their recent large scale implementations and worldwide reputation for quality, coupled with their cutting edge new European designs, will enable them to enlarge their previous inroads into the European and Middle Eastern markets.

                            New Milan Designs

Record Rate of Demand in the European Markets

Tenecor has seen a tremendous growth in European demand for its custom aquarium products ranging from residential consumers to commercial installations including fountains and water features in addition to its traditional aquatic exhibits. This has been due to a combination of the weakened US Dollar and the emergence of Tenecor as an internationally recognized aquatic design, engineering, and implementation firm.
“Tenecor is emerging as a worldwide leader in taking aquarium designs to the next level of evolution, creating solutions for the novice as well as the enthusiast” said Kevin Romano, sales director at Tank’s Aquariums, a large US online retailer, “Tenecor is designing the aquariums as an integral component of a home or commercial property, just as one would in a public aquarium setting.”

The River Treasures Collection by the Creative Design Group, Just Released for the Holiday Season.

The Aquavista 500 wall mounted aquarium is the most technologically advanced home aquarium available today. This patented aquatic bio-system is only 4.5 inches deep and is designed to hang on your wall just like a picture frame. The Aquavista 500 was even featured on HGTV’s, “I Want That.”

The Aquavista 500 incorporates a built in proprietary computer controlled LCD interface that regulates filtration, air flow, lighting and heating. The interface allows the user to monitor and maintain their aquarium at the touch of a button. Its user friendly control panel makes this system virtually hassle free. These revolutionary, space-saving fish tanks are a fish lover’s dream come true. They make the perfect addition to any living or work area where space is at a premium.

The Creative Design Group has announced the launch of its latest product line. The Creative Design Group is recognized as an industry leader in the manufacture of fully self-contained aquariums. Their 2008 release of the Pearl 60 gallon floor-standing model raised the bar in the arena of designer aquariums. They have followed up their success in 2009 with the introduction of the River Treasures Collection.

River Treasures are the ultimate in designer desktop aquariums. Like their predecessors the Ocean Treasures Collection, each aquarium comes with a museum quality hand-painted sculpture that conceals all components necessary to create the perfect underwater environment. These 5 gallon cylindrical aquariums feature patent pending dry-bond tube technology. The dry-bond tube enables power to be fed to the overhead lighting system from the bottom of the aquarium eliminating the need for hanging cords. Lighting, heating and filtration are all reduced to a single electrical cord at the base of the unit.

We are thrilled to add these aquariums to our pre-holiday line up. They would make fantastic Christmas presents. Put one under the Christmas tree for the fish lover in your family. Aquariums are also great learning aids. They will help teach your children or grandchildren the responsibilities that will follow them through into adulthood. As cliché as it may sound, “Aquariums are the gift that keeps on giving.”

In addition the finest aquariums on the market today we also carry a full line of floor standing waterfalls and aquatic art by Midwest Tropical. From classic elegance to contemporary sophistication, nothing makes the design statement of an indoor waterfall. The gentle sound of cascading water has a therapeutic quality for both body and soul!

Exotic-Aquariums.com doesn’t sell fish tanks. We only carry complete aquariums. We offer unique alternatives to the traditional rectangular fish tank, featuring the most innovative desktop, wall mount and free standing models modern technology has to offer. Get the look of a custom aquarium without the custom price at Exotic-Aquariums.com.

According to a 2008 national public opinion survey* 79 percent of Americans believe that zoos and aquariums are good for their local economy, and an impressive 80 percent believe that zoos and aquariums are important enough to local communities to be supported by government funding.

“Zoos and aquariums are woven into the fabric of American life,” said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy. “They are viewed by the public as important to the quality of life in their communities.”

Many zoos have their roots in the Great Depression, when the Federal Work Projects Administration (WPA) helped build many zoos across America. In more recent times, aquariums have been successful anchors of waterfront renewal and development.

AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums enhance local and regional economies, collectively generating .6 billion in annual economic activity and supporting more than 100,000 jobs.

“Zoos and aquariums will deliver incredible value for the Federal government,” added Maddy. “Investment in these institutions will pay-off twice, first in immediate job creation, and second, in the environmental education of our children for years to come.”

Two hundred and six U.S.-based AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums attracted more than 170 million visitors in 2007, up 9 percent from 2006. Approximately 50 million visitors were children, making accredited zoos and aquariums some of the best places for families to connect with nature and each other.

Silver Spring, MD (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 25, 2010 — America’s leading zoos and aquariums are mobilizing to help save wildlife impacted by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Zoos and aquariums have been identified by key Federal agencies, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, as important partners in animal rescue and rehabilitation for the Gulf’s wildlife.

“Accredited zoos and aquariums have a unique expertise with animals that can support the clean-up effort,” said Jim Maddy, President and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. “Many zoos and aquariums already have animal rescue and rehabilitation programs in place, and their trained personnel and existing infrastructure are being made available to help with the oil spill response.”

Currently, it appears that the greatest need is for skilled professional volunteers to assist with transporting and handling wildlife. Aquariums and zoos across the country are ready to send their professional staff to assist with the rescue, rehabilitation and release of animals back into the wild.

Thirteen AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are located along the Gulf Coast, but many more AZA-accredited institutions around the county have stepped up to help. Institutions as far away as Newport, KY and Boston, MA are already organizing and lending expertise to aid rescue efforts in the Gulf.

“The Audubon Nature Institute would like to thank zoos and aquariums across the country for their help with the oil spill,” said Ron Forman, President and CEO of Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans. “Many zoos and aquariums helped us in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and continue to lend their support during this current disaster.”

A list of current rescue efforts by accredited zoos and aquariums and more information can be found at www.aza.org/oilspill/.

Fish Supplies store MarineDepot.com says tighter wallets cause fish owners to cut back on aquarium supplies to the point of ignoring their fish.

Garden Grove, Calif. (Vocus/PRWEB ) March 9, 2010 — To save money, more and more parents are purchasing fish to appease pet-hungry children. But they are not taking care of their aquarium pets as well as they once did.

“We have a price match guarantee on all our fish and aquarium supplies,” said Mike Giove, chief operating officer for MarineDepot.com. “We’ve definitely noticed more people coming to our online store in search of great deals.”

Researchers at Bad Economy discovered consumers are less likely to splurge on quality aquarium filters during a recession, a key component in maintaining healthy aquarium living conditions. They found fish owners are extending the recommended lifespan of filter media as well as buying cheaper fish food, skimping on the dietary needs of their pets.

“Choosing lower quality fish foods and feeding inadequate diets can lead to all sorts of problems,” Giove said, “from poor fish coloration and reduced energy to lowered immune systems, and in some cases, possibly even the death of fish.”

Despite the fact most tropical fish require a temperature range of 72-80?F, some aquarium hobbyists limit the hours their aquarium heaters run. Tank owners are also cutting back on their aquarium lighting even though reef aquariums require 6-10 hours of light each day. This is all in an effort to save on their monthly electricity costs.

“We know that some owners are putting off filter media replacement, buying cheaper food alternatives and feeding their fish less variety, which might seem like a money saver,” said Ken Wong, chief executive officer of MarineDepot.com. “However, in the long run, these may end up costing fish owners more than what they gain.”

While the economy has resulted in many people being stressed over their finances, MarineDepot.com claims fish are perceptive to when they are being neglected.

“We hope that by providing the lowest prices possible we can help fish owners take the best care possible of their pets, even in a down economy,” said Wong.
